I have a 10x10 indoor chicken coop with an outside run 10x50. The floor in the coop is cement, I am looking for help deciding on bedding for the floor or can I just leave it as is and just sweep it out. I do have 30 girls so I do clean out once a week. Is once a week okay or should it be more often? I do have a place where I can buy fresh sawdust/wood chips. If I do put bedding down how deep should it be?

I have my coop on an 8x12 concrete slab I poured with 32 chickens. I add 5 bales of pine shavings to start, and once every week or 10 days there after I add 1 wheelbarrow of organic matter (mainly pine straw or hay). I turn it 1 time after 3 months an do a full cleanout at 6 months. The chickens keep it turned over, and at 6 months it is pretty much just powder.

How you bed your coop may depend on how you manage your manure.
-I use poop boards under roosts with thin(<1/2") layer of sand/PDZ mix, sifted daily(takes 5-10mins) into bucket going to friends compost.

-Scrape big or wet poops off roost and ramps as needed.

-Pine shavings on coop floor, add some occasionally, totally changed out once or twice a year, old shavings added to run.

-Runs have semi-deep litter, never clean anything out, just add smaller dry materials on occasion, add larger wood chippings as needed.

-Nests are bedded with straw, add some occasionally, change out if needed(broken egg).

There is no odor, unless a fresh cecal has been dropped and when I open the bucket to add more poop.

That's how I keep it 'clean', have not found any reason to clean 'deeper' in 5 years.
