Now that the 2022 season has come to a close, I am gearing up for the 2023 season. This year I plan on selling hatching eggs and I would like to attempt shipping chicks. For those of you with experience shipping chicks, do you have any tips? I already got some chick shipping boxes with padding liners.

Website: Breezy Bantam Farm

Here is my line-up:
1. Quail Belgian d’Anvers - recessive white possible but not probable
2. Blue Quail Belgian d’Anvers (Quail and Splash Quail possible) - Recessive white possible but not probable
3. Black Belgian Bearded d’Anvers ( some Quail chicks- less then 10% -possible but not probable)
4. Blue and Blue Splash Belgian Bearded d’Anvers project pen ( 25% Quail patterned chicks expected from this pen)
5. Self Blue/ Black breeding pen. Most of my self blue Females are being bred to a black cock this year For a better type improvement. 100% black babies carrying lavender expected - unless black cock carries quail, then small amount of quail possible. Black male has no tendency towards red and also possesses whitish middle toes-suggesting he is homozygous extended black
6. Self Blue trio (lavender quail is also possible from this trio)
7. White d’Anvers
8. Quail and Blue Quail Watermaal

Do you have any more watermaal hatching eggs available?

I don’t have any shipping advice but would love to order from you. :)

@FeatherProfessor I am just now seeing this, guess I should have been checking back more often. Feel free to private message me or email me at Belgian_danver at yahoo dot com for a quicker response. I don’t always check here if I am short on time.

Update: chick shipping was a great success! Will continue to ship chicks in the future.

Have added a few varieties this year. They will have some very limited availability in 2024 and greater availability in 2025. I hope. I have acquired some silver quail and Black Breasted Red project birds! Also, black Watermaal. It will be a year or two before they are available. But might be able to add a few to an assortment in 2024.

Silver quail are off to a rough start. I lost the female so had to continue forward with just the male and a Blue Quail hen. Hence, it will be another year or two before I get pure silver quail again. But here was the original pair:

And the Black Breasted Red is a proper male but his female is a hybrid that came out of Quail x BBR, so the chicks that presently hatch from them are either this ginger red looking bird (like the hen), black breasted red, brassy back, or buff Columbian. So that is a project pen as well. Here are their pictures:

And finally, a little peek at a young up and coming black Watermaal

Silver quail is one of my two favorite chicken colors ever! (The other being blue wheaten.)
I have always wanted them. When I have a place of my own, I am definitely getting some.

Will you for sure be shipping in the 2024 season?? I’ve been hunting for this breed for two years and no breeder local to us has any, the renowned hatcheries are always sold out even for the 2024 year already, and I can’t seem to find any breeders online that don’t seem sketchy that ship any!
Also do you ship hatching eggs by chance? If so I’m super interested in knowing how your pricing works because I’ll definitely be wanting to purchase eggs and chicks next year!

I will be shipping hatching eggs and chicks again for 2024. Prices will be the same ( though I will need to increase soon due to higher feed costs- probably 2025).

My prices for eggs are by the half dozen or dozen ($20 per half dozen or $40 per dozen) plus $20 shipping and handling per box. and I generally have a limit of one dozen per variety per week. I try to include extras if the ladies are laying favorably.

Chicks are $5 each and shipping usually ranges from $40-80 per box. I generally have a limit of 20 chicks per variety and 30 chicks per box. I don’t usually vaccinate them for Marek’s, but if you want them to be vaccinated I can do it as long as you pay for the vial of vaccine (actual cost of a vial is $35 plus whatever shipping is. If there are multiple buyers requesting vaccination, then I will try to time the hatches to happen simultaneously so everyone can split the cost. I do currently have one person requesting a vaccine for a hatch in mid April). On a separate note, I can also band or toe punch chicks as to which breeding pens the chicks are out of but this costs an extra $1 per chick.

Every year my breeding focus changes slightly. For 2024 most of my quail pattern pens (in both d’Anvers and Watermaal) will be focused on producing blue quail so straight/normal quail hatching eggs will be in short supply ( limited to 1/2 dozen per week for both breeds). I will have healthy numbers for black d’Anvers and white d‘Anvers. My self blue d’Anvers are penned with black d’Anvers carrying self blue this year (this is my second year coming out of an outcross to drastically improve type in my self blues) so any eggs from the self blue pens will necessarily be an assortment of 50% black, 50% self blue.

My black breasted red d’Anvers will be bred to my typey brassy backs this year so there won’t be much in the way of BBR for 2024.

My silver quail d’Anvers and blue silver quail d’Anvers will be limited in supply and the males are all heterozygous gold carriers, so some quail pullets are expected from these pens. Autosomal red will likely be present. But if you just want pets, they will be an option.

My blue d’Anvers will have two trios this year (so this is another variety limited to half a dozen). Both trios feature unlaced blues (they have edging, but lack true lacing). I might have one splash female to add to the mix. Otherwise I expect black, blues, and splash from their eggs. All my solid blues carry quail pattern so about 25% from them will be quail (black blue or splash quail all possible). For this reason (the quail), blue is listed as a project pen only. My goal with my blues is to get splash d’Anvers. Splash is a recognized ABA variety.

So that is how my pens are stacked for 2024. If you are interested, let me know and I will add you to the list!

Some pictures of some of the birds I've got right now in various pens (note the BBRs are not going to be available 2024, but will be 2025). `
