Best goat breed for beginners

I thought you were just getting one as a companion. You need separate housing for a buck. I keep both of my bucks together and they breed the girls in a separate pen. It isn't worth having a buck unless you have 6 does or no buck available within reasonable driving distance. We have 9 goats, the Boer buck breeds 3 of the Does and the Nubian breeds 4 of them. We will be keeping more does next year. We got the Boer buck because there isn't one within an hour of us. I also try to keep a closed herd so diseases don't spread. You want to make sure you get goats negative for Johnes, CL,and CAE. Look them up and you will know why. I would recommend landofhavilahfarm.com, it has lots of good goat info.

Thanks! I will look it up! I am thinking pygmy goats. And yes it would mostly be a companion for my horse, I just got to thinking that it would be a fun thing to do. A couple of my friends show goats in 4h so I have hook-ups to do that.
