Black, prickley growth on bbw turkey necks.. looks like a burr

I have 5 bbw turkeys and 3 have this burr like thing growing on their necks. I have slaughtered turkey number 6 a couple weeks ago and he had one too. It really, really looks like a burr but it seems to be part of the skin. We cut the neck completely off and discarded, so it isn't really a problem but I would like to know what it is.

I just googled turkey beard broad breasted white and on their white chest is a black patch, so yup! I guess it is a beard! Thanks everyone!
