My husband & I are first time chicken owners, & decided to raise a trio of them in our city backyard. The chicks are 6 weeks old now & doing wonderfully, but I'm just not quite sure what a couple of them are. Also, I'm assuming they're all female. If one turns out to be a rooster, we'all have to return him to the farm we got them from, as roosters are illegal in the city.
We've been calling this one Goldie, & I'm unsure as to what she is. Maybe a Rhode Island Red? She is by far the most tame of the 3. When I pick her up she buries her head in my jacket & lets me stroke her back.
This is Speckles & Blackie. Blackie is the most timid, though still hand tame. She's a Barred Rock, unless I'm mistaken. We assumed when we got them that Speckles was a Speckled Sussex, but I don't think she is. I'm clueless as to her breed. Any help?
The chicks are doing great, they've started roosting at night and are pleasant little birds. I still have them confined to a wire dog crate for their outside run for the time being, only because our yard is adjacent to a very busy road, so if they fly over the privacy fence they're goners. My vet said he'd clip their wings for me to keep them safely in their yard, so that is getting done soon and then they will have full access to a roughly 10' x 25' area of the yard we sectioned off from the rest.
Thanks for any help guessing their breed & sex!
