Cedar shavings -Yes or No

What is the story on cedar shavings, some say you can't use them, other say that they do use them. If it's the oil in the shavings then well dried shavings should be OK, right? Opinions on both sides welcome!

I wouldn't use them as bedding but I do use them in my nest boxes to keep away bugs, since you aren't supposed to put dust or spray insecticides in the nest boxes.
