Heifers have a smaller pelvic structure than older cows. That is why small calves are an advantage for them. Usually Angus bulls are used for this purpose on dairy heifers. Interestingly, one of the largest breeds of cattle, the Chianina (sp), produces calves that are very easy to deliver, not only because birth weights are small, but because the calves have long bodies, small heads, and narrow hips and shoulders. It is not unusual for a mature Chianina (sp) bull to weigh over 4,000 pounds.
