Cocci? Not sure...

I have a a 3 week old Polish that seemed fine yesterday morning but when I checked on her in the afternoon she was tucked in a corner and could not stand on her own. She appears to have no strength on her left side and cannot walk without falling over. I watched the video on cocci, and that is exactly what she looks like, but her poop is fine. I have had her quarantined for about 20 hours now and she has had no unusual poops.

Background...she is very small and has struggled to gain weight since we got her. Her sister is easily twice as big as she is. Other than a chronic case of pasty butt she is not sickly and generally has a lot of spunk.

I got some corid last night and gave her one tiny drop straight and then changed her water to include the corid.

She will eat and drink with my help and she tries very hard to get up and walk, she's not a quitter. So I am hoping to se improvement by tonight but am open to any suggestions or thoughts on what else might be going on.

Thank you!

Stay the course and see what she is like after that. Cocci can make birds really sick, really fast. Fortunately, if caught early, it is easily cleaned up and there are no lingering ill effects.

She I appears to be on the road to improvement. Today she can stand up! She still can't walk but she is preferring to sit when she eats and drinks instead of lying down.

I read a great thread about cocci on here where an avian specialist said that if they have pasty butt, the likely have cocci. She had chronic pasty butt for the first two weeks that we had her, so she might have had cocci growing in her the whole time. We have them on medicated feed which goes against my desires, but I just felt led to do that. Maybe it's been keeping the cocci from thriving? I don't know, but maybe.

I did notice one odd thing...since I have had to put food next to her to get her to eat, I have noticed that she only eats the seeds in her chick starter, if she gets a piece of the starter crumble she spits it back out. Curious if that has caused any malnourishment.

Anyways, I expect to see her continuously improve - any advice is more than welcome. Thank you!

Ok so I feeling a bit down...this afternoon she isn't standing as much and while not always, sometimes when she sits she is curling her toes on her left foot. I am just concerned that this could be something else and I am wasting precious time treating her for cocci.

Can anyone tell me what kind of improvement timeline I should see if it is cocci? It has been 36 hours since her first drop of corid. I have the rest of our girls on corid also, none of them have shown signs of sickness.

Thanks!

I don't medicate my birds, I try for natural methods. So take my thoughts as you will...

I would say she needs a healthier gut/crop & energy/vitamin foods to help her fight this. If she's only eating seeds I would soak them in kefir milk a day or mix probiotics into them. You can use yogurt, human probiotic pills (acidophilius capsules, empty capsules over moist food).

Also, make sure she's drinking lots of water & keep her away from the flock for now. You could put in Poly Vi Sol (childrens, no iron) droplets into the drinking water or a tsp of kefir milk/yogurt in 1L of water.

You can give the 9.6% liquid orally as well as in their water. One drop is what I give chicks the same age, it's a safe product.

Look up curly toe paralysis and see if the symptoms fit.

She weighs 80 grams. Tonight I gave her her oatmeal dipped in egg yolk and a multi vitamin in her water with just a tiny bit of kombucha which is high in b2. Makes me wonder if the improvement I saw this morning was because of the egg yolk I gave last night. She has good appetite and drinks, but only when I feed and water her by hand as she can't get up and get it herself. I do place her right next to them in her pen, but still.

Thank you for the suggestion of curly toe paralysis, we shall how she does with the new treatment.

Everyone says not to give vitamins or ferments with the corid, but I don't want to stop giving it until I'm sure. Is that ok?
