Cockerel or pullet ameraucana?

X 2 - I would not even feel comfortable labeling it as an Easter Egger with these photos -- unfortunately, all that can be said is that the bird is NOT an Ameraucana.

It goes to show that folks don't even know what THEY have. Or what their breeds are. The person I got these from said they were all Aracauna mixed.

But I picked up three more chicks yesterday, two Polish and one silver-laced wyandotte. Now I KNOW for sure what breed it is. :)

A pullet will not get red in the comb until they are almost ready to lay eggs, usually around 14 to 18 weeks old. Any bird younger than 10 weeks is nowhere near egg laying age even if it was a super fast maturing hen. Comb reddening before 10 weeks is always a sure sign of a cockerel.

Thanks junebuggena!

That was the one question gnawing at me. What you say sounds true.

Next time I order chicks, I won't name them or get attached until I know for sure. ;)
