So glad I read this thread. I will be repurposing a book shelf with doors and I was planning on dividing the shelves in half so we'd have a total of 4 boxes. Now that I read this I will just use the shelves without dividers to have two communal boxes. Each shelf is 13.5" deep by 30" long.
I think my Big Bodied Brahma Girl will be happy to have extra space. Thanks for bring up this topic.

I was thinking of using an old letter box as a nesting box, do you think it's a good idea?

As you can see there is plenty of room in my nest box for at least 2 or 3 medium sized hens. Naturally, however, they all want to use the same corner. This picture shows the only time I've ever seen two girls in the nest box at the same time. I let them out at 8-9am and they go back into the coop one at a time to lay in that corner. Though, once, the door accidentally closed back and they couldn't get in... boy did I get an earful from the girls! When you gotta go you gotta go!
