Today I found one of my leghorns dead in the run. I have no idea what happened to her. There was blood all over her rear end. She was already stiff when I found her but it didn't look like anything attacked her. If it was a fox or skunk I figure they would have eaten her. Our run is covered so I know it wasn't an owl. Does anybody have any ideas on what might have happened? She was only about 7 1/2 months old.

Hello I've got a mystery I was hoping someone could help me solve. I've got a pen wit 6 hens 3 roosters 2 guineas n 2 turkeys but besides that I have 3 red sex links who I believe are about 3 and I do not know who did or didn't lay but I stopped receiving eggs from them a week or less ago I still get eggs from the others and there's sometimes yolk on the clutch of eggs but none broke (everyone likes to lay in the same spot) well on to the mystery everyone seems healthy but today I found one of the sex link hens under the coop dead I also had a black maran ,less than a yr old she hadn't started laying yet, found dead under the coop about a month or so ago what's going on here?

Hey, ChickenLittle 3 - I see that you posted your first BYC post on the back end of a old thread. We wouldn't want you to feel neglected so if you like, go back to the top of the page and click the button Start New Thread. When the box pops up, type an intro and hit Submit. That way we can give you a proper BYC welcome!
As to your question...are you seeing marks or blood on the dead birds? Do you suspect the turkeys are killing them? Please supply a little more information about your set up and the interaction among the birds. You might also post that in your new welcome - that way many more people will see and respond to it. Good luck to you!

Sorry for your loss

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry for the loss of your hen. Sometimes chickens just die for no apparent reason. Perhaps they are stressed or in shock by something unknown to the owner, or they may have some unseen internal injury, disease, or parasite. This type of death is often referred to in the chicken industry as "sudden death syndrome" or "flipover." The chicken lets out a last squawk, then flips onto its back and dies. I know its always sad to lose one of our flock. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with the remainder of your flock.
