I have welsummers and black sexlinks together and I have a hard time telling their eggs apart because sometime my welsummers lay real dark speckled eggs but sometime they lay light brown eggs. How can I tell the difference between the welsummer and black sexlink eggs?

I guess if your Welsummers vary that much, it is up to you. . . Normally a good quality Welsummer egg should never be mistaken for a normal brown egg though, but I'm sure hatchery stock differs.

Try and track your girls' egg laying and find out yourself if there are any certain traits to look out for.

I dont have my chicks yet, but I read the other day you can put a spot of food grade food coloring on their vent. The little colored dot on the egg tells on the hen.

Good luck.

Happy Hunting.

I wish I had eggs, already!

Welsumer egg color is put on after the egg is formed, sort of like a wash, so it will scrape off.
Sexlink egg color is part of the egg itself and it doesn't scrape off.

See all the beautiful Welsummer eggs in the link: http://wcna.webs.com/eggcolorspatterns.htm

I
do agree with the scratch or rub test, the color would come off.

Also there is a reddish tint to it like a terra cotta pot, some can get orange-er than others while it gets some sort of reddish orange in color. You can tell it apart with brown eggs.

Looks more like an Australorp than Sex Links which the links have the brown in their chest area.
