Hi,
I am wondering how important it is to worm chickens, I have had them for a few years and have had no problems so far. Am I lucky or...can trouble be rite around the corner because of not worming? Also, if I start to worm them what is the best kind, water type, feed type ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.;

I only worm my birds if I see evidence of worms. I have used Wazine but there is an egg withdrawal period of two weeks. Now if I need to worm I use Verm-X. It's all natural and there is no eggs withdrawal period. After I used it I saw no worms.

I have used verm-x too... I use Diotamacious Earth now... it is just alot cheaper and I have yet to have a issue.

It is important to de-worm. You could have worms (well, the chickens) and not know it. Worms take nutrients from the animal, and make your feed costs go up because the chicken will eat more to make up for it.

And the US site for verm-x is http://www.verm-xusa.com

I personally don't trust wazine. I bought a bottle when I first started with chickens, then read the bottle. I never gave it to them. If I wouldn't take it, I'm not giving it to my animals. Sorry.

Worming the chickens for parasites, the same as you would a dog, cat or any other livestock.
I worm once a year with a broad spectrum wormer. Wazine is only good for roundworms. DE and other such natural remedies I only consider to be preventives and won't treat a heavy worm load IMO.
By the time you see worms in the stool, chances are the chicken has a heavy parasitic load.

It is ok.

It really is "de-worming" or "pre-worming" lol

Just the act of administering a chemical or all natural agent to rid a host (or in this case chicken) from a investation of intestinal worms.

I'd still just use a verm-x product or DE... once a month. DE is put in their food and verm-x you can choose pellets or liquid. Diotomacious Earth isn't "earth" at all... it is actually fossils. It is fossilized diatoms (a algea) and it literally dehidrates insects. You can use it on plants, around the house, on pets, and if you use the FOOD GRADE DE you can give it in their food as a wormer. I use it on my cats, dogs, goats, ducks, and chickens. No worms in any of them.

I used the non food grade DE on fire ant hills and it is the ONLY thing that ever worked to truely rid the yard of the HUGE fire ant problem I had.
