Does anyone know if I can use old letters/bill shred for nesting boxes

Mine don't seem to eat it, and I've been using it for about a year and never had an egg with an ink smear. Sometimes little bits of paper are stuck to the egg but they wash right off. I really only shred junk mail and any paper with my name or personal info on it. I do try to avoid shredding credit cards and other plastic, but just because it might be sharp.
