2 dogs came into my yard and attacked my sweet bantam rooster and killed one of my babies and I can't find my hen. This boy is literally everything to me and I am beside myself and just a literal mess. I just cannot lose him I love him so much and I cant handle this. I found him on the ground his legs out underneath him not moving and breathing with his mouth open. I was just distraught i told my husband hes gonna have to put him out of his misery but he can't do it and he said he got up and walked but hes in pain. I did not see any blood. He got him inside under a heat lamp hes drinking water. I can't go tend to him myself yet when i say im distraught its beyond that. I'm having trouble finding a vet in my area that has experience with chickens or knows anything about them. I dont want to make him suffer if he is how do i know if hes injured badly? Please someone help me i cant believe this is happening im onna suck it up and be strong for him and save him if its possible but if hes in pain i dont want to selfishly keep him alive

OK, I can't really help but the best thing you can do for your boy is calm down. That will help you to think straight.

Next realise your boy is probably in shock so He's going to act a little funny for a bit. Keeping him warm & somewhere calm/safe is good.

You have some positives going on here. He's drinking. That's a good sign. He's been up on his feet, also a good sign.

Unless you can find an avian specialist realise you are your boy's best bet. You probably know more about chickens than your vet does. All the best.

Hi! Keep him in a semi dark warm place for the next 24 hours, offer him sweetened water. This will treat shock. Assess his injuries, it's important to clean any wounds ASAP, if you find any wounds, use saline or warm soapy water to clean, then slather with plain antibiotic ointment. This will help heal his injuries.

Please post pictures when you can. I'm so sorry!

They will be in shock when they are attacked. The best thin at that time is to place in a warm, dim, and quiet place. Heat should not be above 80 degrees with a thermometer on the floor. Sugar water (1 tsp per cup) or electrolytes might be helpful. Keep food available such as soft scrambled egg bits, wet chicken feed, and dry too. Do you see any wounds? Saline or Vetericyn can be used on them, and neosporin ointment twice a day. Let us know how he is doing in a bit.

Go with your husband out there and have him help you look over your rooster from head to toe. Look for any bite wounds. If you find those, he will need an antibiotic. He can have aspirin for pain.

Here's what you do in the event of a predator attack to treat the survivor.

1. Treat for shock as the number one step. Give warm Gatoraid or mix a half teaspoon of sugar into a fourth of a cup of warm water with a pinch of salt and baking soda. Have the patient drink it all or syringe it into the beak.

2. Flush the wound well with saline. This is better than soap and water as it maintains the PH of the tissues. But warm soap and water will do. You need to wash away the bacteria from the wound.

3. Inspect the wound carefully. If it has a skin flap dangling, keep that. Do not cut it off. Look for bite, tear or puncture marks indicating a puncture wound. If you see this, the patient will need an oral antibiotic such as amoxicillin. Bacteria from the predator’s mouth can be injected deep into tissue and can kill in as little as 24 to 48 hours. You can order this https://www.kvsupply.com/item/aqua-mox-250mg-capsules-100-count/P06184/250mg once a day for ten days. Or you may be able to find this or something similar at TSC or a pet store.

4. Spray with Vetericyn wound treament and let dry. Use a topical antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin or a generic without pain killer in it to coat the wound. If there's a skin flap, lay it across the wound that has just been coated with the ointment. Then smooth on a generous amount over the top of the skin flap to hold it in place.

5. It's useless to try to stitch a wound on a chicken. Don't even try. It's also useless to try to bandage a wound other than on the feet. The chicken will not tolerate it. It will be pulled off faster than you can blink an eye.

6. Clean the wound every day following the above steps. Keep the wound covered with the ointment. Never allow the wound to get dried out or it will not heal.

The first thing you need to do is calm down. It’s a scary thing to have an injured pet on your hands, but you can do it if you stay calm.

Sending hugs your way! :hugs

Sorry for your loss. PP gave good advice. I had luck crushing 50mg of Ibuprofen and sprinkling a bit of that in my duck's water AM and PM after a mink attack. She was badly injured and I'm shocked but she survived.

May I ask...as for the antibiotic once a day... Are you saying to give a full capsule once daily?
(aqua-mox-250mg-capsules-100-count/250mg). Link doesn't work too see an image, so I'm just trying to clarify if it's a full capsule once daily of aqua-mox 250mg?
