Feeder Build

Thanks JT! I wish we were neighbors! lol I'd just come plop lumber on your lawn with a case of your favorite beverage and let you "have at it!". :bow

It doesn't work like that around here, I'll drink your beer while teaching you hands on how to make what you want.

My buddy came to me one day and asked me if I could build a log arch, I said no, but you can and I'll show you how. We cut up an old trailer he had and I bent the pipes and did the welding, he did the rest. Not painted yet in this photo. I love the hub caps.

I raised the front by 1 1/2" to 4 1/2" overall yesterday but they didn't seem to like that as it was too deep or too high. I had to spend the day at the industrial park making money so I took it off. When I got home what a mess. So cut 1/2" off the scabbed on part for a total of 4" overall and 3 1/4" deep and as soon as they clean up the mess I'll take the rat guard off and see what happens.

Low protein is less expensive.
Grains makes them dig and fling more, looking for those special pieces. :D

Yeah - this feed is 1% less than the DuMor pellet's I was feeding them. I figure that will let me toss them a few handfuls of meal worms to get a little protein boost. I typically let the girls out for "yard time" about an hour before sunset. I'll sit with them and toss a few meal worms while watching them forage for all the bugs, worms, and creepy crawlies they can find. There's not much that I can think of that I enjoy more than watching a chicken chase a butterfly! Well, unless I dump a couple of tubes of live crickets in the run .. hehehehe.

JT - one modification I think I will do on the build I'm working on is to make the sides a bit wider. The problem for me lately is it's been raining sideways with lots of wind. I think if I put more buffer on the sides, I can keep the feed dry a little better.

My run doesn't have a true cover - I've got shade tarps over the top and partial sides to give some heat relief, but it won't stop the water. My next major project for the run areas is to build a roof over the top, which will help a lot with keeping feed dry.

Wondering too if the 3" trough needs to be bigger, so their heads still fit straight on.

Which part are you talking about?

From the plexiglass to the front piece....now 3" maybe 4-5" would work better.

Depth of my deep dish feeder is 3" and they've got about 4 3/8" 'head room.
Cocks comb kinda gets in the way, he prefers to eat out of an open dish.
