The very first thing to put on your "to do" list is find a local mill. Such old time feed mill places exist in many places, even if they have no modern web presence. Any place that has any agriculture at all will usually have a feed mill that grinds their own chicken layer feed. You will often find a savings of 40% off pre-bagged Purina from a retail store.
That is what I would do first. Just to whet your appetite, I'm paying $19 for 100 pounds of layer mash from one local mill. You're likely paying almost that for only 50 pounds?
