When my five week old chicks are knocking over the small feeder do I get a bigger feeder or just throw feed on the ground

Feed on the ground is wasted feed. They'll poop on it and dig it into the ground when scratching, and you'll end up with a lot of food waste. Get a large feeder, and look into different designs - some are better than others (for minimizing waste specifically, because chickens like to rake the feed out with their beaks and still dump it on the ground to be wasted).

I'm also in the market for a new/ first feeder and trying to minimize waste and keep it compact. I have narrowed it down to either a DIY 5 gallon bucket with elbows in it or pvc tube style feeders. Is there any downside to the PVC tube style feeders? it doesn't seem like many people use them and you can attach them to the walls of the coop and free up some space.

The feed will be inside the coop, or i might make a pvc tube inside and then leaving a 5 gallon bucket outside in the run.
