This is my first hatch with quail. Yesterday morning on day 15 the first one pipped. By today it had not gotten much farther. After reading I decided to help a little and put it back. (Maybe I shouldn’t have). It has now gotten out of the egg but still attached to the umbilical cord and possibly the yolk sak. Will it be ok if I leave it alone or are it’s chances not good. It’s chirping and trying to free itself.

Is there still a big visible yolk sac? If it’s just a cord to the inside of the egg with a mostly empty sac it will be fine, when the cord dries it will break off. Sometimes the cord will get stuck to feathers or wrapped around the leg, and when it’s dry you may have to remove it when you put it in the brooder. It looks like there wasn’t any blood when you opened it, so unless it has some issue we can’t see internally, it’ll probably be ok.

I would leave it alone. If it's going to be okay, it will straighten up over the next 24 hours. Usually with assisted hatches, you have to worry about wry neck, curled toes, or simple failure to thrive.

Since you assisted after it was zipping, it shouldn't have much yolk if any left to absorb, and the attached umbilical isn't anything to worry about. It will dry and break on its own.

Ok great! I actually looks much better already. It is moving all over the place and just a tiny string is left hanging on.
