FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

I put down food grade DE after I kick the hill in real good. Works pretty good but make sure its dry out when you put it down and disturb as much of the bed as possible so you can coat as many ants as you can. They eventually die out or move on from my yard because they get tired of me coming around with the DE.I've never seen my girls eat trailing fire ants so not im sure if they would want to tangle with a whole mound of them.
Thank you, looks like I am on the way to feed store. Been thinking of getting DE for a flea problem also. Advantage is not helping my poor dog. So DE it is!

Well to keep in into perspective some people I know have spent that much buying a purebred dog so 1000 for a cow sounds like a bargain in my book, lol!!!

LOL Thats true- at least the cow gives milk and you can get cream, butter, make cheese, etc. :) I think a pygmy goat is more in our price range though- I found some for just a couple hundred bucks. Anyone got some good goats milk recipies? *grins*

I tried the DE for my dog and cats, but it didn't do ANYTHING. After trying the other topicals, I finally bit the cash bullet and started him on Trifexis. It is working well. Vet suggested still using a topical if ticks are a problem, but I haven't had to. I am going to try my leftover DE on the fireants though.

Make sure the ground is dry and the ants are swarming out of the nest that way you can coat as many as possible. I use it all the time on mounds and trailing ants that love to come into the run looking for leftovers.

Awww they are so cute! When I was researching the breeds of goats I wanted it was either pygmies or kinders. Kinders were a breed that was just developing to be a great dual purpose breed for small homesteading properties. http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/goats/

Got the DE and waiting for it to dry up. I think today is supposed to be the last rain day for a little while. I will give this a try for my flea and ant problem. I cannot use any more poisons on the dog for a while. DE and baths are all I can do for him right now.

Wish me luck!

Anybody have any suggestions about what to do about fire ants. My chicks freerange in the back yard and I found several fire ant mounds. I do not want to put down Amdro or other poisons because the little stinkers have to check out everything I put out. Will they eat the fire ants?

I thought about throwing down a little scratch to see if they get interested in eating ants. Will the ants hurt them?

My birds won't touch fire ants. I do use Amdro and just keep the birds in their pens for a few days but their pens are pretty big. So far no problems.

Could you use the Amdro and put a bucket over the mound? I have also heard that cornmeal will kill ants. They can't digest it.

Diatomaceous Earth is a substance that kills insects by dehydrating their bodily fluids. This substance is often used by those who want to keep an organic yard and want to avoid harmful chemicals. All natural and non-toxic to humans, it is a solution that will kill surface fire ants and other harmful insects, but it is unlikely to be carried back to the queen.

HI-There is a company out of Ocala, FL called Environmental Specialists - 352-291-2687 or 800-280-2687. I live in Sarasota on 5.5 acres and they came and treated the entire property for $225. Their product is a "birth control" for the queen. So far I have not seen one mound since April. They recommend twice yearly treatments. The restrictions are: no mowing or watering for 24 hours before and 24 hours after. No restrictions for animals, I believe. That's it! I figure with the time and effort and money to do the drive around with the ant poison, it was a bargain! Remember, if you use them, tell them Deb from Sarasota recommended them!
