Hi, I'm Joy. I've been a chicken herder before, raising a flock of 28 Jersey Giant hens and their overlord, Marvin lol. We moved to Texas and I went chicken crazy. I bought 4 Lavender Orpingtons, three of which died in the first two days. My remaining girl is my personal favorite (please don't tell my other girls!) I have five Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets, two Polands, hen and rooster, and what I was told were Light Brahmas,5 in number. However, although they have 5 toes and leg feathers, they also have the puffy cheek feathers I'm used to seeing on Aracaunas. Do I have crossbreeds? I would appreciate any input. Thanks

Thank you, Teila, for the advice on how to post pictures, since Dragonthehunter immediately knew what I have. I also have two Polish, hen and cockerel, and call the hen Ghost and the rooster Smoke. Ghost has a beautiful topnot, but Smoke's is pretty raggedy looking, as though some of the feathers stay looking like pin feathers in the center of his topnot.
This is my third time to raise chickens. I was lucky enough to be given my first flock, Black Jersey Giants, when we lived in Kansas. I loved those birds, all 28+1, (Marvin the Meanie), but we were victims of the flood of '93 and all our animals were rehomed as we had to move.
In Oklahoma, I was silly enough to take all the leftover chicks from our local feed store, 11 of them, after Easter. Little orange and pink and blue dyed chicks, who all turned out to be roosters, every one of them. Two turned out to be actually blue Aracaunas, the rest who knows.
Out here on my sister's place, I added to the small herd of 11 miniature donkeys, two horses, three pygmy goats, an Anatolian/Great Pyrenees, a Border Collie, a Standard Poodle, a chiweenie, and the little Yorke puppy my sister gave me since I lost my last Yorkie to lymphoma two years ago, with all my feathered pretties. Oh, I forgot about the four RIR's I also bought, but sold when they cornered Blue, my only Lavender, behind the warterers and plucked all her tail feathers out til she just had a bloody, naked butt. I cried and held her all afternoon as I put an ad on Graigslist for the four culprits. Have I mentioned that Blue is my favorite?
We also have three heifers and a steer, and another Standard Poodle puppy that my sister hopes to show coming next weekend. A full cast of characters!
Thanks again for all the warm welcomes, advice, and onfo

Nice to meet you Joy. Glad you joined the BYC flock. Would have to see photos to try and determine what breed? You can also post photos at "what breed or gender is this," and get more opinions.

Welcome to BYC Joy!

I am glad you joined us!

I took a bunch of photos yesterday, but I am not very familiar with texting and posting. It took me two days to figure out how to join BYC lol. I am trying to learn how to do this. Soon as I figure it all out, I'll probably send more pics than anyone wants to see. Thanks for letting me know what link to go to.

Thank you. I have been using BYC for info for a long time, but I lived in an area of Oklahoma that had no cell reception, so when I tried to join, it would always drop me or buffer for hours. I had to go ten miles to town to be able to use my phone! I have always enjoyed reading all the messages

Welcome!

Lots of friendly and very helpful folks on BYC so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures about our feathered and non feathered friends

Can any one tell me how to get to the area where you can post pictures for What Breed? I don't know what a URL is and that't what it asks me for. Not at all tech savvy. I feel like an idiot because it took me all afternoon just to find my posts again. So if you know, could you please send me very specific details on how to post pictures? I don't even know what a 'thread' is. At least I can send a text, my hubby only knows how to answer his phone and hang up lol.
