Help with sexing ! I ordered (8) day old chicks from Meyer Hatchery of mixed breeds, all supposed to be a pullets, this one a golden cuckoo maran. She is already top of the pecking order at 4 wks old. She’s the only one with a comb developing at the rate it is. Beautiful feathering on the legs, will not back down to anyone, although very sweet and friendly with me. Is she a roo?

Excuse my ignorance- first time with a Marans. What is telecast? Is that the comb development? Thanks for your help.

Simply foreshadowing of events to come. Marans roosters develop combs very early so you can tell cockerels pretty early, often by 4 weeks, when many breeds are not commonly "telecasted" until 10 to 12 weeks of age.

I’m really bummed if you’re right (I had a gut feeling- hence my post) I can’t have Roos in my city limits. I’ll have to rehome him. He’s so sweet and comes running to me everytime. Better to know sooner rather than later. Thank you for your help.

Here is my Cuckoo Marans Roo at around 4 weeks for reference. Yours looks similar. My little guy was the slowest to grow and feather out compared to his sister, his sister had almost no comb or waddles at this time.

Any updates?
Yes, he was definitely a Roo. Started crowing just after this post. And it turned out I had another Roo too- a silver laced red Wyandotte. So bummed. They were two of my favorite chickens besides my polish. Rehomed them both to a local woman who runs a farm animal rescue (thank the Good Lord!)

I’m sorry, that is really hard! I had gotten 8 chics all whom were supposed to be pullets and ended up with 2 Roos in the bunch as well. The Speckled Sussex Roo attacked this one pictured so he was rehomed immediately. The cuckoo Marans I kept because I just couldn’t part with him. Thankfully I have kool neighbors otherwise would not have been able to keep him either. It sucks getting rid of them when you get so dang attached, they become your babies 🙁.
