Howdy!

I purchased 5 straight run chicks from Alchemist Farms. I thought it would be fun to do a week by week progression of these chicks, while guessing Roos/Hens. I'll be starting this progression at Week 2 and posting an update once a week. Type your guesses! I honestly have no idea but am hoping for hens!

Week 2:

Chick 1: French Blue Maran (Possibly Roo? Larger Legs/Comb Development?)
Chick 2: Lighter Sage Egger (Hen?)
Chick 3: Black Olive Egger (Possibly Roo? Very slow feather growth)
Chick 4: Darker Sage Egger (Hen?)
Chick 5: Moss Egger (Hen?)

I should have gotten more Marans! Time will tell!
Marans are just weird. My mom has a blue copper Maran chick who had a bigger comb at two weeks as well, but it stopped growing and she’s all pullet. My Black Maran looked like this at almost 3 weeks and then turned into this .. 8 weeks pictures below . I’m pretty sure he’s a cockerel so that was his before and after . You may have a pullet! It’s not red yet and marans will redden up quick as you see here.

Have you noticed a big size difference in the legs of the Marans? Seems like my Maran has way thicker legs than the rest.

UPDATE WEEK 3:

I have named 1, Daniel the Rooster. Huge legs and fast comb development. Im still leaning towards 3 being a rooster due to slow feather growth and big legs. My guess is 2, 4 and 5 are hens.

WEEK 4 UPDATE:

Unsure if 3 is a rooster, looking more like a hen. 2 makes me a little nervous due to the big comb. 1 seems to be an apparent rooster.

If #1 is a cockerel, his wattles should be pinking up real soon. Maran roosters are known for that. Although #2 has a bigger comb, they might actually be mixed with legbars (which commonly have bigger combs ) keep an eye on that one. #3 is feathering in a tad more slowly, but I wouldn’t give up hope on that one being a pullet just yet. #4 and #5 look like pullets to me.

I’m sure you’ll have better guesses in 2 weeks :)
