The new try is a lot better, but you have the tension a bit too high - you can see the fabric puckering. What does the back look like - my guess is that the back thread is tight and the top thread is pulled all the way through and you can see the loops on the bottom.
It takes time to see how your machine works with the freehand stitching. I learned on a older brother, and then when my DH got me the new Kenmore, I had to relearn to free-hand with that one. And now I haven't touched it for over a year and will have to figure it all out again.
Who says you can't cross your stitch lines? I use a lot of patterns that cross. ha ha I know that in meandering your not supposed to, but sometimes you may stitch yourself into a corner and you will need to cross to get out...
And even stitches will come with time as you get more comfortable.
