Has anyone on here ever bought hatchery quality oriental gamefowl, such as shamo, saipan, malay, etc., from a hatchery? I am sure the birds were not show/breeder quality, but, what were the faults? Does anyone have any pics? I would really just like to know what exactly is wrong with these birds from the hatcheries, is it the tails being too high? That is my guess, based on pics of hatchery dark cornish. I have bought plenty of more typical birds from hatchery stock, and , while not amazing show birds, they were not terribly wrong either, very minor cosmetic details wrong generally.

They always have the same theme, no matter which hatchery they come from. Bad station, bad tail, short neck, no brow, wrong eyes, wrong comb etc. And saipans died out in this country in the eighties by most accounts. Most real oriental gamefowl will do poorly when artificially hatched, lots of feet issues, hard to shove feet that big into a tiny egg and depend on a machine to turn them enough to keep them from developing crooked. Plus they usually need a hen to keep them from physically harming each other once they hatch.

For a meat bird that "looks different", I just can't see the price the hatcheries charge for their "oriental games."

I have some hatchery saipan (from Ideal) that are 6 weeks old. I will try to get some photos but I haven't figured out yet how to post them from my new cell phone. I think the pullets have really pretty feathering and long tails compared to my other chickens. We will probably be eating all the roosters in a few months. I'm going to try and see if the hens will be good for raising baby chicks of other standard breeds. This is my first time trying them. I just feed them regular crumbles.

I ordered a few of each of the breeds I was interested in from Ideal. Saipans were the most interesting to me so I ordered 3, 1 male 2 females(got 2 males 1female). I also "thought" I ordered 2 each of malay, thai and shamo. I have 3 malay, 1 shamo and 2 or 3 thai. They stay so busy and are with other chicks it's hard to keep count.

I know they are probably mutts and crossed willy nilly but I actually LIKE them. It was surprising. I hoped I would like them, that's why I bought them. But I really, really like them.

They definitely do not look like normal chickens except the saipans, they do look almost normal. The shamo is most aggressive and it's a male. He's also the most friendly when I have the bag of meal worms out. 2 of the 3 malays are the largest so far and they are monkey's who like to jump on top of everything. The saipans and malay are the least friendly. Both the shamo and 2 of the Thai's are always trotting along behind me when I'm near their coop. I try to spend time with them every day and the shamo and 2 Thai's will even allow me to pet them.

All of the breeds are pretty fearless compared to the normal breeds they are with. They are also great foragers and first ones out of the coop when I open the door for them to free range. They are only about 1.5 months old but I took some pictures.

Shamo boy, notice he's getting purple sheen

Shamo? boy (I think) he's also getting rainbow sheen

Shamo, he's my favorite so I took lots of pics

Chick horde (orientals, serama, sultans, polish and standard cochins)

Malay are the dark browns, Saipan behind, shamo behind I think.

2 Saipan (both boys I think) and a Thai

Malay to the far right, it's the tallest chick.

if u wunt good oriental for show u have to buy from a farm that breeds good brood fowl $$$$$$ u know wut i mean gallero !

Orientals from hatcheries typically do not look like the breed, too small, too large, "deformed" almost to look nothing like the original birds. And then you have that some of them may have high tails, and they wouldn't be game. Gameness doesn't matter to some, but if they aren't game then it indicates a cross most likely or horrible breeding. I say horrible though because i try to keep the gameness intact... If they don't have it why call them a game?

PS. That's not to say they're all like that, i mean you may get a few that are "ok" and maybe even great. But they generally will not be. The Madagascar games from Ideal have most likely been crossed with Turkens due to a few reasons.. Increased egg laying capabilities and non-gameness for two examples.

Thanks for the input so far. I have heard good things about Superior farms, and bad things about Ideal before. I guess I was wondering mostly if anyone has actually had them, and knew for sure. Example, I have hatchery barred rocks, for eggs. They are great layers, with nice personality, and basically look like barred rocks. Out of 30, I don't think any could win a show..mostly bad combs and poor color, but, for my uses, they are fine. I think what I'm hearing is that the gamefowl are worse than barred rocks if you buy them at a hatchery, or, can some show rock breeder chime in and explain why all the hatchery layer birds are no good, etc. Anybody with hatchery game breed pics, would be awesome.

All hatchery birds are not your typical show birds and anyone wanting to win a show should go to breeders. Hatcheries cross in various birds for whatever reason usually to help in egg production. They breed so they can sell a lot of chicks, not for quality. The Old english from them are heavily in dutch, the dutch is crossed with OE. A lot of kraienkoppes have been crossed with leghorns, Rhode island reds from them are just production reds which are pretty much Rhode Island Red crosses.. Those are just a few of the breeds..

So something that's pretty rare as Oriental gamefowl and other breeds, especially ones that are poor layers (like the Orientals) you couldn't expect to get good examples really.

ETA: Superior farms is supposed to be good. As they breed for quality, but can't say on personal experience. Rod could tell you about them though..
