Hello, I just joined this site a few days ago. I live in south eastern Washington state. I have had my chickens for a year and a half now. I started with two but unfortunately one died this summer. They are Wyandottes. Sorry, I'm not even sure how to spell it :) I plan to get six more in the spring and build a brand-new chicken coop. I want to get at least three different kinds I am thinking Rhode Island red, barred rocks and maybe optington. I hope these four types will all get along. If anybody sees a problem please let me know. I am looking for egg layers, but I am not a real farmer as my friend in form to me :) because I do not plan to kill my chickens when they are done laying. This site has so much great information. It is slightly addicting.

Once your new chicks are close to the same size as your Wyandotte, they should make a nice mixed flock. Integration can be a touchy thing, so read up on it...this article should help:

Good luck, thanks for joining us!

Thanks everybody. I will definitely research before I add new chickens. Since I am new my posts are be in moderated. Which is fine, but do you know how long it takes? I posted a second picture on my "what is this chicken" thread a few days ago and it still hasn't come up. Just wondering.

Welcome to BYC, you are not alone. Some people allow their older hens a nice retirement at the end of their laying days. Whether to cull or keep is a personal decision people have to make on their own.
