Hello, this morning my wife found Casey with blood coming out of her vent and brought her in. I looked at it and it was a little prolapsed (about 1/2" of inside was outside). I felt her for an egg and couldn't feel one. I sent Yvonne back out to look for an egg with blood on it and we put Casey in a tub with warm water. Yvonne found the egg and since Casey has been in the tub she has pooped thrice and wiggled her butt a lot. The poop was not bloody. So I'm fairly certain she is not currently egg bound and she may have fixed her prolapse herself for all I know. When she came in, it seemed like quite a bit of blood (maybe a tsp?), but she doesn't seem to be bloodying up the water much after an initial rinse. She seems happy and normal. So I figure I will let her swim a half hour to an hour with frequent water changes to relax and clean everything. Yvonne is watching her now while I type this. So my questions are:

I have both K-Y and Prep H, which should I use if I have to reinsert her prolapsed area?

What else should I be looking for?

What other questions should I have asked?

@Miss Lydia
@Amiga
@casportpony

Who else should I have paged?

This is my first prolapse so I only know what I have read so far here. Thanks for your help.

I gave Casey her second breakfast

. Much better than the first. Later Yvonne gave Casey a bath and I spent some time with her while she was preening. When she is preening we have a little game. Her feet are alway cold after swimming so I lay my hands over them to warm them up. Casey appreciates this but wants to be in charge of her feet so she yanks them out from under my hands and puts them back down over my hands. There now she can warm her feet and not have them be covered.

At this point she usually pays some attention to my face. She puts her bill on my forehead or nose or plays with my mustache like so (sorry for the nasal spray, but this was an impromptu photo session.)

(You can't even tell that she's on my hands here...)

Then I lift her up a bit and she balances on my hands... Completely unfazed and still engaged if I talk to her.

Today, she went a step further. She moved over onto just one hand, so I took the other one away.

She's such a sweetheart

She could be an indoor duck in a heartbeat, but she has too many friends outside and we don't want the eternal diapers

. Additionally, she is too much of a trouble maker. Remember that she was the duckling that stole the earring out of Yvonne's ear. She's the duckling that was eating Latte's toe in her super cute picture. And she's the duckling that mopped up our back yard with Kaine before she decided to be a "girl". She would be eating jewelry, coins, screws, shoe laces, knives, poisons, bullets and chocolate if she was an "indoor" duck. Best to leave her with the flock.

I knew there was something there first go around . Wonder what is causing this did the vet know?
She said the original problem was an irritation. That could have been Kaine being extra Kaine (I doubt it this time of year, he has been pretty mellow and never has been over the top with Casey - Tella maybe). Or an extra big egg for her. Her eggs are a little short vs the big ducks, but almost the same diameter, so that could have easily been it since she was 1 of 2 layers we had at the time (now nobody is laying). Once there is an irritation I guess it gets rough (maybe like a scab) and the poop clings to the rough area. This probably happens all the time with minor things, but she had two big ones and she probably just pushed real hard trying to fix them and prolapsed. Over all it isn't very far inside her so I am guessing it is in the small area where both eggs and poop go just before coming out of the vent. Allie turns more than the entire size of Casey's prolapse inside out every time she poops, but it goes right back in afterward.

I just gave Casey 30 ml of food solution. She struggled while I tried to get the tube in, I cut it about 6" long total so it goes about 3" down her throat, but she didn't seem to have any real problem with my injecting 30ml over about 4-5 seconds. I figure that gives her 5-6 hrs to digest it before I give her some more with her medication. Her normal food has some chunks that are too big to go though the syringe so for now, I make a smoothie from her food in the blender.

@casportpony This is what I am currently using.

Since I have 15 ducks and want to be prepared, Ideally I would like a setup with an ID of 1/8" or so (so I wouldn't need the blender) and a semi-rigid (more than this silicone) tube so that guiding it in 1 handed would be easier and where the needle/tube locks to the syringe so there is no chance of it falling into the duck. I would love something like the stainless steel ball tipped crop feeding needles I have seen, but the largest I have seen is 8 gauge which if that was the I.D. that would work, but I am guessing it is the outside diameter or even worse the ball diameter and they are made for a parrot so I am sure even my smallest runner could live with a larger needle. I wonder since you seem to do this kind of thing frequently, if you have run across a supply company that has larger crop feeding tubes/syringes or if I am just completely off base and should just find a better water grade tube for my existing syringe. Thank you for all the assistance.

@Miss Lydia: you are welcome to all the snow we are supposed to get - another 3-5 inches on Friday - cuz as far as i am concerned, we already have enough. dont need any more lol ive been clearing paths for us and the ducks and right now it seems all that work was for naught cuz it snowed right on top of it. thus far casey still has not laid an egg and seems to be doing just great. i can see the difference in her demeanor. she is much more active out of her kennel and wants to go exploring... and it is just nice seeing her healing so well. i hope tony will upload the other adorable pic of her soon - hint hint hubby - ivtook it this morning. she decided to rest her bill in my winter top - soo cute. well it is time to give my girlie more water and then we need to get to bed. good night and type at ya soon... hugs
Tut mir leid! Das Bild war früher nicht da. Ich liebe Dich. Bis bald!

Congrats on tubing!

On large fowl (chickens, ducks, peas, turkeys, guineas) I don't cut them, that way I don't worry about about them getting swallowed. Small chicks I use something like this cut down 8 french

Largest I use is a size 30 french, and that is big enough that moistened crumbles pass easily. Smallest tube I use on an adult is 18, and crumbles will pass though that if I moisten them then use a stick blender to puree them.

Here are the sizes:

3lbs 10.6oz, so up 0.4oz, I'm calling that a win, but want just a drop of additional insurance, so I put her feed at 50ml (up 5). She is getting more of an appetite for the meal worms (stinker), and she ate a couple (literally under 10 the whole day) pellets of food. Her poop looks like normal duck poop now so all she needs is an appetite. We are going back and forth getting better and worse with the tube feeding, I learn something and it gets better, then she learns a new trick and it gets worse. I can now open her bill in no time, but it is playing dodge around with the tongue that is hard. Once the tube is in though, it is easy and fairly quick and the level of food is still low enough that there is no regurgitation.

Casey got her evening feed. I should get a new tube in a day or two, then I can try feeding her between my knees instead of sitting like this. I had cut this tube off shorter because I was thinking of how I had to medicate her with the small syringes and this tube is pretty soft and floppy making it more difficult to guide with one hand. It can be challenging to control the bird and the food at the same time. Sometimes she is more cooperative, sometimes less so this is probably about average now. The only audio on this was Yvonne asking me a question out of the blue and Casey pooping. I figured neither were things anyone wanted to hear, so you get a music track.
