We have 30 chickens and have lost 2 in the past 2 days. Yesterday, our broody Silkie was dead (still on her nest )when I came home from work. There was no obvious cause. She had been sitting fora few weeks and we couldn't tell for sure but the eggs didnt look viable. She just sat and sat. I did see her give up from time to time to eat and drink. She was a sweet, mellow chicken only 9 months old. Sad.... This was a total shock. Her Silkie sister just stares where she used to sit.
Today, I came home from work and noticed a Buff Orpington lying on its side dead in the yard. There was no obvious cause. She appeared vibrant and healthy this morning. She was only 25 weeks.
Is there anything we need to check? We don't want to keep losing our flock. We are pretty particular about keeping the coop clean. We do have pygmy goats in the same run as the chickens but they have a pretty large area to roam.
Please help! Our daughter's are just heartbroken. We are not sure what to do.
