Appearing bigger than them holding out your arms might be enough. Holding a broom out horizontally might deter him. If you have to block them from attacking you can put your foot forward (rather than kicking) and let them attack your boot, but if I need to take quick action I take hold of the back of the neck and pin their feathers down pretty quick.
You really don't need much force to restrain them, but if you don't pin their feathers down when you attempt it, you might catch a wing bone to the eye (been there.)
