My Mottled Java sure was working hard in the nest-box last week. She plopped out an egg the size of a duck-egg - 89 grams!
I figured it must be a whopping double-yolker. I just hard-boiled it to use in some potato salad. We all gathered around to watch me slice it in half to revelal the two lovely yolks. But not so fast. That knife wasn't getting through the yolk at the narrow end so easily. Boy were we shocked to find that it was actually a small, underdeveloped egg at the one end of the egg. Little brown shell and all. It barely has the beginnings of a yolk inside.
