Impacted Crop Diaries

She is still alive... Her crop seemed less full last night, and she perks up after a drink of water, but this morning her crop was full again, I think she must have decided she was hungry last night and ate some bedding, she hasn't touched it all day yesterday so I thought it was safe to let her sleep in it, now she is on a towel so she doesn't eat it. I was worried about her not having any strength so o have her a tiny bit of banana, but she hasn't eaten any really.
Can you isolate her in a dog crate and use a t'shirt as a floor? Don't let her eat anything right now. Just offer water. You need to get that crop totally empty first. She can go days w/ out food. But not water. Were you able to get some stool softeners to give to her?

She is totally isolated in a plastic tote I usually use for my baby chicks when they are brand new. And her bedding is now a towel and some paper. And she has water available but won't drink u less I dip her beak in it, which is an improvement over yesterday when I had to use a dropper.

And no I wasn't able to get the stool softeners like I was hoping yesterday, she is one of many things I've got to deal with right now... Namely home schooling two kids, chasing a toddler and nursing a two month old.

I hear ya. Life is crazy. See if you can get them and give them a try. You can order them online and have them delivered. I know, there's shipping to pay then. But sometimes when life is crazy, it's a little luxury for me.

Keep us posted.

Darn it! In was at Walgreens at 5am, and didn't pick any up....
I'll see if i can get it tonight.
As of right now Chicken has been pooping normal looking poop, drinking when I dip her beak in the water, and still feels like something is in her crop, though it feels loose and moldable... It's not possible in just feeling her muscle right?
She is quite happy to be pampered so much, and I'm so confused about what's going on with her... I hope I have not misdiagnosed her.

Well, w/out me feeling, it's tough to say, but in general, if you can feel a lump and mold it, you are feeling stuff in the crop. I think it's starting to break up and pass through. Keep her isolated till you get it to clear. It may pass on its own. If you can get the stool softeners (be sure to get the one that is just Docusate Sodium. That will help pull water into her crop further softening up what is in there so she can pass it.

Will she be able to walk again do you think? Her foot is less curled up, but she still doesn't put any weight on it and doesn't try to stand.

I don't know. I'm not sure what the leg issue is. Could be she's just weak. Could be Mereks or she could have sprained it. Let's focus on getting the crop cleared and get her eating and see if the leg thing doesn't just resolve itself w/ some time.

That's my hope. That she is weak and it isn't anything else. I'm going to check on her in a few minutes and I will update afterward.

Chicken is still alive, and it seems her crop has emptied enough for me to feel the actual impaction. She also has a bit of spunk this morning and wouldn't let me dip her beak in the water so easily. If she continues that I will have to go back to the dropper, but I think she was just being a shot. Occasionally I drop a kit of something minced into a pulp into the water to get her interested in catching it and therefore get her to drink a little on her own, I did it this morning and she immediately tried so I think she is a bit more alert than before. The amount in the water is so incredibly small that I'm not worried about it hurting her, just trying to get her to drink on her own.
