Hi I bought 2 9 month old chickens from a girl a few months ago and added them to my flock, well now all of my chickens have lice and I can not get rid of it, I have used damacious earth on them and made a dust bath area with damaciouse earth mixed in and I have also put garlic powder in their feed, but its not working. I am very frustrated and ready to just get rid of them all and start over. Does anyone have any advice/help they can give me. I have heard of using seven dust but I am really worried about using stuff like that since I have a veggie garden and strawberry boxes near my chicken coop. Ok well thanks for any help!!!

DE will not rid you of the problem... you will need sevin dust or permethryn... treat the birds. coop and nesting boxes and repeat treatment in 7 - 10 days.

I have used Sevin dust 5% in my garden all of my life, and on my chickens, recently when a breeder friend gave me a nice rooster that brought some lice with him. After using sevin dust they were gone the same day, and 10 days later I dusted again and clean the coop and nest boxes. It is tried and true. DE and Neem oil , and some of the other rememdies may help, but if you have an infestation, either Sevin or permethrin is the way to go. Here is a link to make sure of what you have, because mites can cause anemia and death if left untreated: http://anrcatalog.ucdavis.edu/pdf/8162.pdf and

Thank you both... guess I will give it a try... does the seven dust take care of the eggs as well?

Thank you as well for the websites as well! It is defiantly lice not mites, they have the egg clusters.
