Infertile Roosters

If you're wanting a roo for protection purposes only you're probably better off without one. They'll alert the flock if they sense some sort of danger, but then immediately run. It's very rare to get a rooster that charges into the fray and actually protects his other flock mates. A protective rooster is often a dead rooster. The only kind of rooster that might have difficulty fertilizing your hens is a bitty bantam, and even the you can succeed, and he definitely doesn't qualify as a good flock protector (most of the time).

Thing is, an unfertile rooster will not protect a flock. The hormones that cause breeding also cause flock management. A lot of people say roosters are not great at protectors but there are great roosters as well as rotten ones.

However a lot are rotten, if she doesn’t want fertilized eggs, I can’t see her in favor of culling a rotten bird.
