Our oldests chicks, 3 to 6 weeks, are living in a "brooder" coop in the barn. Toasty warm and very bright with lots of room, they love it.
It has been very warm and the side of our stone barn was covered with box elder beetles. I thought, wow, they snapped up the 2 beetles that were crawling on my pants leg yesterday, this will be chickie delight. The older chickens know they dont taste so good but the little guys loved to run around with their kill.
I scooped up a bunch in a feed cup and went back to the younsters with their yummy treats.

I entereded the coop, I was swarmed by anxious chicks knowing that something good was coming. I dumped the 30+ bugs on the shavings, the chicks ran in and then instantly stopped realizing their treats were moving, they all backed up and turned and ran!

Not the reaction I was expecting, they were a bunch of scaredy chicks!
