I'm looking for barred rocks that my two daughters could participate in local 4h with and show. I ordered some eggs off eBay years ago and the birds were big and nice looking. A fox got in the coop and killed them all. I got a order from MCmurrays hatchery and those birds were much smaller and puny looking when they grew up. Any help in locating show quality barred would be appreciated. I have a very broody hen that would gladly hatch them.
Thanks

have you tried the Breeder's Directory at the national Club website?
Jamie Duckworth in North Carolina.
Yup, Jamie 's birds are highly thought of.

Above is from Bob Blosls' website. You can take his advice to the bank and cash it. Bob is gone now. An honored veteran member of the poultry fancy. A superb teacher who knew how to make precious info understandable to the novice. A treasured Educator here on BYC. You can read his Heritage Large Fowl thread here on BYC It is locked now in remembrance of Bob. We miss him dearly here on BYC.

The lady above has stock from very high quality vintage strains.

Or perhaps you would like to try Barred Rock Bantams. Dick Horstman is a legend in the poultry fancy. Has been breeding these bantams for 52 years. :

And Dick will ship eggs. I would buy a bunch so you have a selection in your chicks.
I would also rent/buy an digital incubator and not trust these valuable eggs to a hen. It is always cheapest to start out with the best quality you can.
From Dicks' website:
"Our Barred Rocks have won at the biggest and the smallest shows in the country.
They are very good layers of a medium bantam egg. They will set and hatch their own and they make good mothers.
They are very docile and can usually be picked up at any time even when running outside. They also make excellent 4-H projects."
