I found a partial solution to the problem by buying them the kind of fountain waterer that's made for house cats. It has two replaceable filters, and they seem to like the moving water. It's not perfect - I still find them trying to sneak into areas where there are puddles - but I think it has cut down quite a bit on the gross water drinking.
