If you have a 3g modem connected to your raspberry (they're pretty cheap these days and yeay, more electronics, hah hah), you can always us the AT+CMGS commands to send SMS messages to your phone.

I learned COBOL and dBase back in high school...but...remember nothing and if I did remember, the knowledge would be quite useless anyway.

Aaaaccttuuaalllyyy.... I still get paid to do some CoBOL. Yeah man. There are a few survivors of the Y2K purge. And we programmers with CoBOL on their creds are so few these days that we get to charge big bucks.

You could have it send text messages as well.. Most cell companies have a way to email to text, I think verizon is your phone number @vtext.com

@vtext.com works good. I do it all the time. Format is ##########@vtext.com (########## is phone #). Every provider has their own format. Easily found online.

It hasn't changed much. LOL. Okay, so they went OO in the 90's or so but the guts are still the same. People ask me - how did you learn English (non-native English speaker here), I always say CoBOL. Hah hah!
