I know this won’t work for everyone, but it suits my situation with a small flock.

I was really happy with the small auto fill cups, but they freeze up really fast. I have been reading reviews and ideas, but I really don’t want to risk a fire with an electrical device.

The items are the bowls and holder that will hide the hand warmer from the chickens.
The hand warmer heats for 18 hours if it has air available. It does not get hot enough to start a fire. I will put the warmer on heavy duty aluminum foil and not on loose hay.
I tested the hand-warmer concept and it did prevent the water from freezing when other water froze with temps down to 28 degrees. That temp held for several hours overnight and into the morning. My frozen bucket of water did not defrost even when daytime temps rose.
I like having a self filling water supply all the time, but it is more important to me that the chickens not be at risk from fire. I will refill their bowls each day from the house supply.

This method also does not require any electricity.

Alternate method to prevent water freezing.
