I found some great ideas online from other chicken fanatics and I made new nesting boxes out of 7 gallon buckets. I work in the food industry so these buckets come free to me. The Hens enjoy them. The top one is their favorite and they often fight for position and time in that one. The one right below it is second best and the others have yet to be used...out of 7 birds. All obsessed with the top one.
I line the bottom quarter of the lids with tape or the air tight rubber piece under the lids so they do not cut their feet. I screwed in about 3 to 4 screws per bucket in the back to the wall and they are supported with cynder blocks underneath. I thought keeping them off the ground with a few screws would hold but to be safe I put the blocks underneath...trial and error right when doing projects.
I also made a waterer out of the bucket and some drill in chicken cups. Testing it out now so if it holds I will take a picture.
