Just wanted to leave a quick note to introduce myself and to thank you all in advance for helping me out and answering my, what will likely be, stupid or Noob questions lol.

My babies will arrive on the 25th and I have set up a XL tote in my basement for them. My coop is built but not insulated so I wanted to give them the best chance at surviving the colder nights.

I have read a lot of different options about brooder bedding and am curious to hear everyone's thoughts on what works best for them!

Thank you and happy chickening!

J

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I use pine shavings too.
How many chicks, what size tote and what is your heat source? FWIW, I'd never use a heat lamp in a solid walled brooder. Okay, I admit it... I'd never use a heat lamp!
Chicks start flying at about 2 weeks old and can fly out of most totes. They also need about 1 sq ft of space per chick until about 3 weeks old then they'll need 2 sq ft per chick.
