I have bantam chicks that are 6 weeks old today, teeny tiny but totally feathered. Right now they're in a big brooder in our garage, which is uninsulated with a cement floor, but not drafty. It's getting down to upper 20's/low 30's at night.
My husband is insistant on taking away the heat lamp NOW

In my head I know they'll be fine, but I guess I just need some reassurance!

Ok, focus on the question....

In this case, I think I would keep going down 5 degrees a week like you did the first 6 weeks till the brooder temps meet the ambient temps. That is what I do here in the frozen tundra of MN anyway.

If I were you, I would be asking my husband..."And how would you feel if you came out to look at them and they were frozen to death?"

If its that cold, keep the heat...just in case.

and there was me thinking Texas was all sun and cactus! I am with Mr Rathman here, keep the lamp until their temp reaches ambient temp. Better safe than sorry besides there isnt enough meat on a bantam to eat if they froze!
