I've had chickens for almost 6 years. We have had Easter Eggers, Black Sexlink, Coco Maran, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Copper Maran, Blue Splash Maran, Black Cooper Maran, Salmon Faverolles, Dominique, Lavender Orington and Road Island Red to name a few. Love every one of them.

How many of our peeps are really new to raising chickens and how many are old-timers?

In addition to answering the poll, please reply with some fun details, like:

What got you interested in raising chickens?
Did you ever "take a break" and not have chickens?
What breeds did you start with, how many, and do you have any pictures to share?
6 years ago, at the state fair, a chicken coop on wheels caught our attention. we stopped and talked with the folks. Well, 3 pullets, a very iffy portable chicken coop (they said easy to move--haha) and $2000 later, we were in the chicken business. That first winter was rough, but we all survived, including my husband! In the spring, we moved the girls into an old mini barn converted into a chicken house (coop) with a small fenced in area. Fast forward six years, and the number of chicks blossomed to eight, the fenced in area expanded to accommodate them, and everyone seems to be happy campers.

I started raising chickens last Spring, after we got some chicks for Easter, that ended up being roos. We found someone to take them, then a short time later we bought a coop, run and 7 hens. We now have 5, 2 Rhode Island Reds (Budicia & Astral Traveler), 1 Australorpe (Freddie), 1 Barred Rock (Frankie) and 1 Buff Orpington (Fluffy).
