I was speaking with a reporter today and he asked my the % of people that raise chickens for different purposes.  I had a general idea, but thought I'd get a more accurate response with a poll.

I watched "Food Inc" read Barbara Kingsolver, Joel Salatin, Michael Pollen, Elliot Coleman.
I want to be independent of big box food stores. I want to be more self sufficient. I want to know what I'm eating. I enjoy the process. It's really simple to feed yourself; big business has made it complicated and expensive! I object! I live in town in the old big treed part on one lot with my Springer Spaniels who keep the birds herded into the back yard. My neighbors don't even know I have 4 beautiful gold laced Wyandottes!

I also have a 2500 sq ft garden on a nearby farm and I can and freeze a whole freezer full and 300 jars of garden produce. I'm a great cook and a fresh egg is a small culinary miracle!

They are just fun!

We got them for the eggs, originally. But they are so much more. Entertainment, and ornamental, and charming companionship. A reason to be outside.
