For precisely ALL those reasons, plus the fact that I've realized that they are for me the best natural antidepressor in existence. Chicken zootherapy is the best!!!

When I've had a hard day at the office, there is nothing like coming home, taking a cold beer from the fridge and chilling with my chicken. Their entertainment value is way underrated! Of course, we BYCers all know that...

I see that lots of people have pet chickens out there! Looks like eggs are an important reason, too! I'll have to bookmark this page.

It is a breeding / genetics thing...I gotta have something and it fills that addiciton thing...I figured meat was for us...I also feed my extra roos to my other pets...snakes

The other reason I raise them is for breeding purposes. I am interested in preserving rare breeds and breeding high quality exhibition poultry.

When I started raising chickens again it was because I had before and have missed it terribly. But since starting again, it has also filled some of my spiritual, emotional and physical needs as well.

I have been going through a lot of things since being diagnosed with a pretty debilitating disease. Depression and inability to do anything really strenuous are factors with it that have been difficult.

I am finding that the chickens are really good therapy for me. I talk to them and they even answer. I watch their antics throughout the day, every day! And the level of work required of me is just right. I can do things for them a little bit at a time. My family and friends have all remarked at how happy I am lately. (They haven't seen that in me for about 7 years)

I also find a spiritual calm in my chickens. For me, finding a way to find meaning in life is important. With chickens I see the full circle of life.... Birth do death. As well as answering questions that I have personally about our responsibility to the beings that are our food.

I couldn't have found a better fit than chickens. They are so much more than merely a pet, or a source of eggs and meat. Thank the heavens for them, I do!

I chose "pets" (I love my chickens) "eggs"(I sell the eggs for profit) and for other I would have "ornamental"(I have a flock of fifty different exotic breeds for laying and for the pleasure of feasting my eyes on the beauty of the exotic fowl

).

Nifty, you can add "ornamental"

And by the way, I'm reminded of this quote-

"You are not keeping them, of course, to make or even to save money. You are not keeping them as pets. You are keeping them for the simple pleasure of their company and the beauty and tastiness of their eggs and their meat. You are raising them because you wish to strike a modest blow for the liberation of the chicken-- and indeed, of all living things on earth"

We raise our Delaware chickens for their large - extra large eggs - great foragers - love to hear the roo's crow, nice big meat birds (extra roo's end up in the fridge that don't make the grade) Love how they look - they clean up the barn yards, eat tons of weeds and seeds, are very prolific egg layers - also for eggs - we sell hatching eggs and also eggs for culinary uses- we wanted to preserve a rare breed, and chose the Delawares-
