I'm not sure where your town is......Just a couple of thoughts. Here the birds like to roost in our large cedar tree, don't know if it is the same for pine. Also my inlaws pine tree's seem to drop alot of limbs that could be a problem if you have a covered run. These are just thing to think about because my coop & run are under tree's too & with the ice storms we have had in the past those have been things that have happened to me.

Sooner, she is maybe 5 miles west of us... And other than the Pines breaking in ice there really is no issue with placing the coops under the pine, however they will not get as much fresh greens since very few things will grow under them.

We have rock so nothing grows under them anyways. LOL. The inlaws drop limbs in regular weather but they are old & they plan to cut them down anyways.

I like my pens under the tree's, in the summer it is really cooler for them. Yeah it was a pain the year that we had the ice but I didn't move the pens just cut the limbs & repaired the top.

Yes, I have some extra Muscovey ducks. Momma_Raven, I will send you a PM

you wouldn't happens to have girls would you?

I will have to count and see how many of the 11 are hens. I want to cut them back, but not get rid of all the hens and have too many drakes. The only way I can tell for certain is by the sound they make. The drakes sound like they are breathing heavily. The hens almost quack (but not quite)

i have 3 hen ducks to 1 drake and they are going bald... poor little things- so did they ever settle the issue of legalities of muscovies?

Hey everyone, thanks for the great feedback. The pines are actually off to the side of where the coop will go but there are a lot of pine needles in that area. It wont actually be under it, but close enough to provide some shade and maybe block some of the north wind since they are on the north side. That was just the last thought/question I had for the area I preferred to put it, so I am excited! Chicks are growing fast and I need more coops!

Oh and the coop is going to be 20' x 30'. Most of it in the sun, so plenty of room for grass, going to try and do a mini version of this... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=482852&p=3 (Post 165) and a cross with MJ's.

Wish me luck lol

Yes, the federal law that would have prohibited the sale of muscovey ducks and the keeping of muscoveys except for food, was repealed last year. The federal govt didn't have any idea there were so many hobby folks with muscoveys. They were trying to prevent them from being released into the wild, since that has happened in some southern states and it has upset the balance with native species due to cross breeding.
