i've had my two hens for 2 1/2 years and had my first scare last night. Although I have an Eglu, the girls have always preferred to roost outside during good weather. At first I thought this was risky, but after 2 1/2 years without a problem. . .I guess I stopped worrying about it. Last night I woke up to racket and ran out to see what was happening. When I flipped on the lights something ran out and over the back 6 ' fence. The girls were OK and I secured them in the Eglu (and will every night now). I thought maybe I had dreamed it because Rosemary is moulting and not looking her best anyway, but further inspection this morning something did try to get her. . .although the wounds are very superficial. I guess my main concern now is do I have to worry about letting them free range during the day? I will definitely not let them sleep outside again, but hate to think of them cooped up all the time since they love the big back yard.
