Parakeet aviary with real grass?

My parakeets live in an outdoor aviary with pine shavings on the ground that I clean and replace every week. I am planning on making the aviary larger. I thought of an idea of using real grass in the aviary extension because I don't have to clean it. Their seeds will remain in the original portion of the aviary. Has anybody had experience with using real grass in a parakeet aviary? And how do I grow grass instead of using sod?

I meant real grass in the bottom ground of the aviary, not glass as in glass walls.
