It was the air temp Thankfully it was just a day I think that was that low, but the schools and some businesses had to close because peoples cars wouldnt start and kids cant wait for the bus in that! Crazy times! -17 still is sooo cold! I hate when the year gets to that point.

Oh my word, I can't even imagine that kind of cold!! I hope your flock all came through it okay?

It does not get cold enough here for frostbite

Yeah, but you get pretty dang hot in the summer there, right? That can be just as brutal to get birds through!

I did lose one last summer. That can happen when the Highs are over 110 for several days.

I did adjust the misting system after she passed and did not lose anymore.

Yes! All the birdies were just fine! They even came outside for a bit Lol!

I think I remember you mentioning that before. I'm so sorry that you lost a bird, but glad you were able to prevent any more losses!

Hey, it's been a little bit since my last post. How about some kiddo pictures? These are a bit delayed because I've been having a time here... I don't particularly want to talk about it. But point being, these pictures were taken on Friday, not today. That's just a few days off of the appropriate monthly date for them, so we'll just call it close enough.

First, the youngsters at about 6 months old, starting with the Silkie x Cochin mixes.

The marshmallow squad! Taking pictures of these three is so hard because all they want to do is...

But anyway... Here's Amaretto ❤

And Glutty It's hard to get a picture of this, but Glutty has gotten a bit of a mohawk down the back of her head and neck. You can kind of see it here?

These two are inseparable, and so, so adorable Here they are exploring the wood pile together:

The OEGB boys weren't exactly cooperative, so here's the best I got of them. First, Feldon:

Next up is the older kids at about 8 months old, starting with Buzzy, also a Silkie x Cochin mix:

That's all from Friday, but here are a few from today as well. We got about an inch of snow, maybe an inch and a half at most by the end of the day, but the girls were NOT happy, and much of the flock never left the coop. Here's Havok and Peanut Butter, discovering why they were first in line when I opened the coop door in the morning and no one argued with them about that.

Peanut Butter is NOT impressed.

The marshmallows just seemed confused. "This again?"

...And Sumi and Havok have decided that they're going to hide under the edge of the dust bath until it goes away.

That's really all I have for now, except that since I didn't post about it here yet, I'll mention that I set some of Zinnia's eggs for the New Year's HAL. I'm... not optimistic that they're fertilized, but I'm giving them until at least Sunday, day 7 for the last egg, to be sure.

No dice, as you probably already saw. https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...day-hatch-along.1429095/page-23#post-23714203 I'll probably still leave the incubator running until Sunday, but they were pretty definitively clear.

Probably for the best, though. It was kind of crazy for me to set eggs this time of year anyway.
