Hello everyone. My local pound ended up with those two juvenile birds on their hands. They are not specialist so they are unable to sex them. I was thinking of adopting them and adding them to my little backyard flock, but I am in a residential area and if one of them is a male I will be in trouble :D. Are they at an age where the gender can be determined from photo alone ?

Thanks

I'm getting vibes,, that they are both males. If their feathers are sickle shaped,, (pointed at the tip end,, ) then likely cockerels. If feathers are rounded at the tip,, then likely pullets. The massive looking legs on the BLACK one also speak male to me. Comb, and wattles look pretty red as well.
My go to expert that I used to TAG,, has not been active recently.
On another thought,, Whoever decided to let them go to the pound,, may have known , they were cockerels. Pullets/hens are easily sold/given away.:caf

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and:welcome

That was my feeling too. They weren't even handed over to the pound, they were just found somewhere. The owners didn't even bother they were left to fend for themselves.
Thanks for the reply

That sure is a sad situation. I know roosters are an unwanted chicken in most hatches. I cant keep roosters in my area as well. Roosters are very difficult to rehome. There are way too many of them out there.
I am not against peeps raising them for food. This way,, rooster has a good life,, with just one bad moment at the end. Much better than what the hatcheries do:hit

Oh yeah I don't judge people for raising rooster's or chickens for food, they have a much better life in a backyard than in a factory. I raise quails myself for food. But ... Abandoning them to their own device is not fair and as inhuman as factory farming.
To me if you can't keep rooster's you should buy sexed chickens. That's what I did with my silkies.

From what I saw last time I went to the pound they have the enclosure split in two, one area with wire so they can dig a bit but not too much, and one harder area with hay.
