No they do not suddenly appear because you have chickens, they are already there you just have not seen them.

They will be attracted to your chicken coop just like they are attracted to garbage cans with no lids or not secured lids, dog food or cat food left out etc.

We have a garbage can w/o a lid and have never had a problem. Although we also have a dog that barks if anything gets remotely close to the house.

You are lucky, if you don't close the lid on your trash can here Mr. Raccoon will get in it.
